Remembering the charge of Beersheba
Join us at Anzac Square on Sunday 19 October for a free talk by Captain Adele Catts on the historic charge at Beersheba. The men of the Light Horse were dramatic, almost glamorous figures and it is easy to see their exploits as some splendid adventure. But theirs is a record that is superb in its own right. We don’t need to embellish it. The history of the ALH is a great story and one worth telling & retelling. The mounted soldier is one of the most evocative symbols in Australian military history. They are a celebrated part of Australia’s Army heritage. The attack on Beersheba is one of the most significant mounted charges by Australian Light Horse Regiments during World War I. Taking place on 31 October 1917, during the third Battle of Gaza, this engagement was a vital component of the allied forces’ campaign to secure the Sinai Peninsula. It was a decisive victory and is now remembered as the last great cavalry charge. In this talk Captain Adele Catts will outline the history of the charge and explore some of the myths surrounding this event. Captain Catts is the curator of the Army Museum South Queensland, located at Victoria Barracks in Brisbane. After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries, embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands. Location: Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
