Explorers - The Age of Discovery with James May
James May will premiere a landmark live theatre show in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom, bringing to life the stories of the extraordinary explorers who traversed the deserts, scaled the mountains, sailed into the unknown. The live show combines theatrical techniques and James’ charismatic storytelling to create an evening of compelling intellectual entertainment. From Ice Age migrations to space travel, the stories of famous, infamous and unknown explorers will come to life in a theatric style, presented by British television presenter and award-winning journalist James May. James May is best known as a co-presenter of the motoring programs Top Gear and The Grand Tour, and as the host of the Our Man in… TV series. Few endeavours have captured the imagination and spirit of humanity as profoundly as exploration. Audiences will embark on an awe-inspiring journey through time and space. They will discover the stories of those who risked (and sometimes gave) everything, driven by insatiable curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for discovery, pushing back the boundaries of the unexplored regions of the world, and now, the universe. Live on stage, James May will unravel the breathtaking tales of humankind from the earliest wanderings of ancient hunter-gatherers to the intrepid, often obsessive explorers, among them Lief Ericson, John Cabot, James Cook’s navigator Tupaia, Stanley and Livingstone, Gertrude Bell, through to the moon walkers, space exploration and the seemingly impossible challenges of interplanetary and intergalactic travel. Guided walk of the Billai Dhagun Track
Learn about the unique plants and animals of the wetlands on this gentle, easy, all abilities 2km walk. A volunteer guide will lead you around the trail, visiting the Bird Hide, observe distinct changes in vegetation, and discover why Boondall Wetlands is an internationally important conservation area. After the walk, visitors can enjoy other nearby walking tracks, relax in the picnic area, and visit Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre. Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, secure and fully enclosed walking shoes, sun-smart clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Bring drinking water and a snack or picnic lunch as there are no food outlets on site. Note: Walks are subject to weather and environmental conditions.
Karawatha Forest Discovery Walk
Join this informative guided walk around one of the many tracks in Karawatha Forest. A volunteer guide will lead you through the forest and identify many of the native flora and fauna you will see along the way. After the walk, visitors can enjoy other nearby walking tracks, relax in the picnic area, and visit Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre. Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Join Mike Gilmour, Queensland Wattle Association, on a guided walk through Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha to view wattles in blossom. What to do on a Brisbane Winter’s Day in the sun Try a walk amongst wattle blossoms that stun Sparking in the sunlight with their green and gold, For all in Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens to behold. Lambs Tails, Zig Zags, Silver Wattles, Golden Wattles in bloom, And more with buds ready to burst from the Winter gloom. Poem by Mike Gilmour© Come join Mike Gilmour, self-styled Wattle Wag of Queensland in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha to view the wattles in blossom on a guided walk. Each walk will include a talk about varieties, the history of the wattle in Australia and Queensland, the importance of wattle as an Australian symbol plus some unusual facts and common myths. Walks will run for approximately 1.5 hours. Requirements: This walk includes moderate physical activity, including walking slightly longer distances, up gentle slopes and stairs or walking on some uneven surfaces. Some standing periods for explanations but no sitting. Please wear a hat, enclosed walking shoes, and be sure to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Audience: Suitable for all ages, interested adults and families with children. Meeting point: Meet at the Visitor Information Centre.
