Outdoor Gallery Art Projection: Sebastian Moody ‘Voices’
Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways into imaginative, curious, and engaging spaces. Comprising of light boxes, banner, vitrines and evening projections. This artwork ‘Voices’ by Sebastian Moody is part of Council’s Digital Art in the Collection. Brisbane City Council ‘s Public Art Collection features more than 200 artworks by local, national and internationally renowned artists. This diverse collection comprises artworks in a range of media from traditional bronze sculptures through to contemporary time-based art. About the artist: Sebastian Moody Born in Sydney, Australia, Sebastian Moody currently lives and works in Brisbane, where he completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at QUT (2001) and a Master of Museum Studies at The University of Queensland (2009). Equal parts gravitas and humour, his language driven works continue in the art history traditions of 1960’s conceptual art and concrete poetry. Moody’s artworks draw on the connotations of words when they are placed in certain configurations. His work incites intellectual and emotional reactions, confounds our comparisons, and effects our understanding when a specific word is accompanied by another. Moody prompts us to consider both what we think and why, and in what sequence. About the artwork: ‘Voices’ ‘Voices’ is a bold digital artwork of kinetic typography intended to create moments of contemplation as a large-scale projection and as a stand alone video work. Somewhere between a list and poem, Voices is composed solely of six letter words drawn from my continually growing database of some 180+ words. Voices continues my interest in text art, concrete poetry, minimalism, and how language is used to create and share meaning. Words were selected that could function as both nouns, verbs, adjectives as well as words related to politics, poetics, and the artist's experience of living in Brisbane. Sebastian Moody: Voices, 2022 Projected kinetic typography (developed in collaboration with Sai Karlen), 35mins, 2 seconds Font: Optician Sans - a contemporary adaptation of the Snellen eye chart. Location: Howard Smith Wharves Art Projection (see location on Google maps).
Outdoor Gallery Art Projection: Beth Mitchell's 'Holocene'
Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways into imaginative, curious, and engaging spaces. Comprising of light boxes, banner, vitrines and evening projections. This artwork ‘Holocene’ by Beth Mitchell is part of Council’s Digital Art in the Collection. Brisbane City Council ‘s Public Art Collection features more than 200 artworks by local, national and internationally renowned artists. This diverse collection comprises artworks in a range of media from traditional bronze sculptures through to contemporary time-based art. About the artwork: ‘Holocene’ ‘Holocene’ traces the interplay of Nature and Humanity in an underwater illustrative photographic + video ensemble. Cinemagraphic collages of local, foraged natural elements portray earth’s garden timeline impacted by humanity’s exploitation and devastation. The film cycles through stages of earths natural timeline while humanity presents both a harmonious and destructive presence throughout. Primitive lifeforms are suspended in nourishing fluid in our earliest environment, to Australian Natives developing and releasing life force into an ever more fruitful Nature. Lastly, glorious abundance as earth garden is enriched, while shadowed increasingly beneath the darkness of Humanity’s blind choices. Flame presents destruction causing the cycle to begin again. About the artist: Beth Mitchell Born in Toowoomba, Queensland 1991, Beth Mitchell invested a majority of her youth lost in creative expression and underwater experimentation through the medium of digital photography. Her work explores diverse femininity and contemporary womanhood through environmental, social and cultural stories and experiences in a captivating world under the surface. Beth’s work is held in public and private collections internationally. Location: Howard Smith Wharves Art Projection (see location on Google maps).
Outdoor Gallery Art Projection: Hailey Atkins’ ‘Whither Weather’
Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways into imaginative, curious, and engaging spaces. Comprising of light boxes, banner, vitrines and evening projections. About the Artist: Hailey Atkins Hailey Atkins is a Brisbane based sculptural artist. A graduate of the Queensland College of Art, Atkins has exhibited in Queensland, interstate, and in the Netherlands, where she undertook an exchange and a residency with Kaus Australis in Rotterdam. Hailey was a finalist for the Churchie emerging art prize (2018) and co-founded Wreckers Artspace in Brisbane. About the Artwork: 'Whither weather' Whither weather extends upon the Sunny Side Up’s curatorial theme of 'celebrating Brisbane as a subtropical city' to present a short journey through place both real and imagined – a place populated by bright, abstract, weird and wonky objects that are an ode to the South East Queensland summer. As a response to the sculptural works already commissioned for the Sunny Side Up exhibition, the animation incorporates similar forms, colours and textures to reveal new perspectives and ways of interpreting them. Forms are deconstructed and recombined to create new forms that reference things such as Brisbane's hilly suburbs, hot summer days and subtropical thunderstorms. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Location: Howard Smith Wharves Art Projection (see location on Outdoor Gallery maps).
