About This Event
Join other like-minded volunteers to help protect and restore Brisbane’s unique biodiversity through our Habitat Brisbane program. Whatever your skill level and motivation, joining your local Habitat Brisbane group is a great way to connect to nature and be active and healthy, all while meeting new people, developing new skills and making a difference to your local environment. With 160 groups across the city there’s bound to be one near you! Habitat Brisbane volunteers undertake a variety of activities including: managing environmental weeds revegetating with local native plants creating habitat for native wildlife citizen science projects. The Bowman Park Frog Habitat Restoration Group meet the first Sunday of the month 2-3.30pm. Venue: Bowman Park, 247 Simpsons Road, Bardon.

Clock Tower Tour

Atomic legacy: 80 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries for a free talk exploring the impact and legacy of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ahead of their 80th anniversary. This August marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the first uses of nuclear weapons in warfare that resulted in the deaths of up to 220,000 people and a lifetime of suffering for many hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors). In the week of this important anniversary, this free talk will feature: An overview of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki against the historical backdrop of the War in the Pacific. Harrowing personal stories of survivors of the bombings. The role of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces (BCOF) in the post-war occupation of Japan, including images of Hiroshima from Australian soldiers' collections. Memorials in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, their significance, and the differing narratives that dominated Hiroshima and Nagasaki's recovery.After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries, embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands. Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.

Magic Globe: A Story of the Seasons is an animated adventure that is perfect for engaging children from 5 to 12 years old. On vacation at her grandpa’s, a little girl named Mia accidentally discovers a mysterious piece of astronomical machinery. Edmund, Mia’s eccentric uncle, tricks the girl into using the tool’s secret powers to change the world’s seasons. Take a free volunteer guided walk to learn about the plants and features at Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Our volunteer guides all have a love for Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens and a desire to share their passion and knowledge with visitors. Walking tours for individuals and small groups (up to ten people) are free and do not require a booking. Have a larger group? Find out more about booking walks for groups 10 or more in size. Meeting point: Meet at the Mt Coot-tha Visitor Information Centre. Note: Walks may be subject to environmental conditions and guide capacity on the day.
Bands in Parks: Dancing Through the Baroque
Bands in Parks performs at the Thomas Dixon Centre. Experience the elegance of Baroque music and dance in this vibrant performance themed around historical dance. The Brisbane Baroque Players will perform on period instruments in authentic style, joined by Dance Kaleidoscope demonstrating English Country Dancing. Enjoy the sounds of harpsichord, baroque strings, and baroque wind instruments in a courtly celebration.

This dazzling space show launches visitors through space and time to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky, including our own nurturing Sun. Tour familiar stellar formations, explore new celestial mysteries, and discover the fascinating, unfolding story that connects us all to the stars. Those who come along for the journey may never see the night sky in the same way again. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. Session concludes with a virtual tour of the Brisbane night sky.
