Hear stories of convicts and commandants, revealing how punishment, labour and authority shaped daily life. Along the way, our guides bring the settlement into focus, illuminating the social fabric and living conditions, as well as the central role of the Brisbane River in sustaining the colony.Woven throughout the tour are First Peoples' responses to British settlement, their enduring connection to Country, and the Frontier wars that directly followed this era. Join us at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre this Science Week for a fascinating talk exploring the remarkable plant life of Karawatha Forest. Home to over 320 plant species, this unique area contains some of the last remaining wet heathlands and melaleuca wetlands in Brisbane.Discover how local plant species thrive in tough conditions like heat, drought and nutrient-poor soils, and uncover the hidden genetic adaptations that allow them to survive and flourish. Hear from a University of Queensland researcher as they reveal the science behind these resilient plants and why understanding them is key to protecting our unique natural areas.The session includes a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute Q&A.Presented by The University of Queensland.About the scientist: Kath McLay is a PhD researcher at The University of Queensland. Her research explores how species adapt to survive in harsh environments, with a focus on the genetic changes that allow native plants to grow and thrive. This is an aquatic workout that uses all major muscle groups. Participants wear a buoyancy belt so there is no need to worry about being in deep water, however basic swimming skills are required. You must bring your own buoyancy belt for this class.
