Hear his funny stories, ribald jokes and facts about medicinal and culinary uses of plants of the Elizabethan era. Audience participation is positively encouraged! Sunday guided walks - City Botanic Gardens
Come and explore the magnificent City Botanic Gardens and find out about what makes the City Botanic Gardens so unique within the Australian landscape. Sunday guided walks are led by City Botanic Gardens volunteer guides. Requirements: Wear a hat, enclosed walking shoes, and be sure to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Meeting point: Meet at the Visitor Information Kiosk (next to the Queensland University of Technology's Main Drive pathway). Note: Walks may be subject to environmental conditions and guide capacity on the day.
Tycho Goes to Mars
Our favourite cheeky dog is blasting off to discover the red planet, Mars. Tycho is in search of water to fly his steam-powered space kennel back home. But how will he find water on Mars? Produced by Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks, Museums Victoria. Session concludes with a virtual tour of the Brisbane night sky.
Renaissance music in the gardens - Harp performances
Enjoy the delicate sounds of Renaissance period music in the beautiful setting of the Japanese Garden. This performance features the harp: which existed in a variety of forms during the Renaissance period - from small traveller’s harps to full standing harps found at the royal court. Children under 16 are to be accompanied by an adult. Note: The performance is in the Japanese teahouse - please sit on the lawn to listen. Elizabethan dance performance
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First, music and dance experienced a golden age. She was very fond of dancing and demanded her Court be proficient as well. The popularity of dance reached such a height, that some of the great political and romantic court battles of that time were not fought by political means, but on the dance floors of London Court. Some of the most notable Court dances of the Elizabethan era included the stately Pavane, the more moderate Almaine, the energetic Galliard and Courante, and the outrageous La Volta, where the male partner would lay hands on the female to lift her up into the air. The country dances of the middle and lower classes were generally less 'stately' and tended to be progression style dances with interaction between partners and other dancers. They often had interesting names - such as Jenny Plucks Pears and The Maid Peeped Out at the Window. Enjoy watching - or even participating in - a display of Elizabethan dancing with historian Dr Heather Blasdale Clark (with music by Phillip's Dog). Location: Performance is on the Amphitheatre Lawn. Get your passport for a thrilling journey through the Solar System, out of the Milky Way Galaxy and to the edge of the observable universe, returning home via a black hole. Narrated by Tom Hanks. Session concludes with a virtual tour of the Brisbane night sky. Passport to the Universe was developed by the American Museum of Natural History, New York in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Major support for new version provided by the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco.
